| 1938 Stock on the Isle of Wight |
|
In 1967 when the Ryde - Shanklin railway was electrified British Railways continued a long tradition of equipping
the Island's railways with second-hand rolling stock. Cars of London Transport Standard Stock were modified
repainted and moved to the Island.
By the late 1980s these trains were beyond life expired! Some cars were almost 70 years old, the fleet held the
distinction of being the oldest trains in regular passenger service on the British Rail system. A modernisation
programme in 1989 saw their replacement by more second-hand trains! . 8 pairs of 1938 TS driving motors were
selected and refurbished at Eastleigh. 4 more cars followed in 1992. The cars were painted in the red, white and
blue Network SouthEast livery then applied to Southern Region rolling stock. Most of the Standard Stock cars
were scrapped, a few returned to London for possible display in the LT museum.
Subsequently several cars were withdrawn. In 2000 units were repainted in an eye-catching "dinosaur" livery.
This year (2003) unit 007 has returned to service in original LT red livery albeit with the effect spoilt by yellow
warning panels on the cab ends! More information about the Island Line can be
found at the Island Line website.
The following photographs were taken on 15th July 2003. Units 002 and 006 were in service, units 004 and 008 were
stabled at Ryde and 007 was in the shed. It appeared that a second unit was being repainted - more information on
this would be welcome.
The use of both the 38 TS and the Standard stock on the Isle of Wight is now described in detail in a new book by
